General

Is your name Happy Art Center or South Chicago Art Center?
Our legal name is South Chicago Art Center NFP. People sometimes refer to us as Happy Art Center because that is our web address.

Are you a City agency?
No, we are a non-profit 501 (c) 3.

How are you funded?
We are funded by individuals, foundations, and City agencies. Click here to see a list of our funders.

Are you located in the City of Chicago?
Yes. We are located in the City of Chicago, specifically in the neighborhood called South Chicago. It is basically as far south and east in the City as you can go.

How do I get there?
Click here for driving directions and here for public transportation directions.

Programming

Are all your programs free?
Yes, all programs are free and open to the public.

Why are all your programs free?
When the Center first started, a nominal fee was charged to each participant. When that session ended, the fee was dropped and attendance skyrocketed. It is not realistic to charge families in a low-income neighborhood, such as South Chicago. These families, many with several children, cannot afford it.

Do you offer music or performing arts classes?
No. Currently we offer visual art classes.

What types of visual art classes do you offer?
Drawing, painting, sculpture, book making, mask making, sewing, quilting, silk screening, multi-media, tie-dying, digital photography, and movie making are some of the classes we have offered/are offering.

Do you offer programs for adults?
We do a few art workshops for adults at a local school. Our programs focus on youth age 6 and older. If you are interested in participating in a workshop for adults, contact Beth.

Getting Involved

What volunteer opportunities do you offer?
Teaching, assisting with classes, class prep, chaperoning on field trips, grant/funding research, data entry, filing, garden work, organizing, and cleaning are the main opportunities. If you have a volunteer idea that is not on this list, contact us!

I'm interested in volunteering, who do I contact?
Send an email to Beth. Please include what you would like to and when you are available.

Do you offer opportunities for teachers with little or no experience?
Yes. Interested individuals should, email Beth a resume, 3 references, availability, and class curriculum.

I'm a college student. Can I intern at the South Chicago Art Center?
Yes. We have had greater success working with students who believe in what we do as opposed to those who are simply trying to get a good grade/obtain course credit. Truly interested students should contact Beth. It is a great opportunity for the right individual!

Are you looking for new board members?
Yes! Email Sarah if you are interested. We are specifically looking for an accountant to join our board but we are open to others who are interested.

Who is currently on your board?
Click here to see current board members.

Do you accept art material donations?
We do, with the exception of oil paints and any other art materials that are toxic to children. We are a small operation and are not always able to travel to pick up supplies. If you could drop them off (call to make sure we are there first) or mail them, that would be helpful. Also, please make sure that art materials are in good condition (markers that work, paints that are not dried up, etc.).

We are happy to provide a letter for tax purposes.

I want to be added to your mailing list. Who do I contact?
Send an email to Beth with your name and address. We send out a newsletter 3-4 times a year.
